How far will my Australian dollars go?

  • From country-hopping backpackers to long-haul holidaymakers and honeymooners, more and more UK travellers are keen to enjoy Australia’s wide, open spaces, world-class surf, vibrant cultural scene and unique wildlife. How far your holiday money will go depends on what you want to see and do.

  • On a mid-range budget, it’s possible to stay in comfortable hotels and dine in local restaurants for between A$100 and A$200 per day, depending on the part of the country you’re visiting. For those who want to splash out, Sydney and Melbourne rank as two of the world’s most expensive cities.

  • By avoiding the tourist hotspots and heading off the beaten track to Australia’s smaller towns you can enjoy Oz’s famous laid-back culture for significantly less. Travelling out of season will also make your money go further. Expect to spend more between October and February, the southern hemisphere’s summer months.

  • You won’t find a service charge added to hotel and restaurant bills so it’s up to you if you tip – 10 per cent is pretty standard for good service.

  • The Australian government adds a 10 per cent Goods and Services Tax (GST) to almost all purchases. Visitors are entitled to a GST refund on any purchase of A$300 or more, no more than 30 days before they leave the country, which could save you a few extra dollars. The scheme doesn’t apply to all goods and you must be able to wear those that do qualify or carry them as hand luggage onto the plane.

Some common questions

  • The Australian dollar, or AUD (A$), is the official currency of Australia. Like the US dollar, it’s subdivided into cents, with 100 cents to the dollar – just like the 100 pence we have to the pound here in the UK.

The issuing authority for the Australian currency is the Reserve Bank of Australia. But you can order it for your trip from Post Office – online or in any of thousand of participating branches. Use our branch finder to find the one nearest you that offers this service.

  • The Australian dollar is the sole currency of the Commonwealth of Australia, which includes Christmas Island, Cocos (Keeling) Islands and Norfolk Island, and is also used in the independent Pacific Island states of Kiribati, Nauru and Tuvalu.

  • It’s easy to buy Australian dollars online using our click and collect service or in selected branches by finding your nearest travel money branch

You can get our best exchange rates, and we can also deliver to your home, if you buy online. You’ll get a better rate the more you buy. And, if you buy at a good time for the pound, you can lock in that great rate.

One handy and secure way to buy holiday money is on a Travel Money Card. It’s a prepaid Mastercard that stores up to 23 currencies, including the Australian dollar.

  • The highest value Australian dollar banknote is the A$100 note. Other note values in Australia’s currency are 5, 10, 20 and 50. It was the first country to introduce ‘plastic’ banknotes made of a synthetic polymer.

  • The lowest Australian currency denomination isn’t a dollar at all, but rather 5 cents. There are 100 cents to an Australian dollar, and 10, 20 and 50 cent coins are also in circulation.
