Despite its increased popularity in recent years, Brazil’s still friendly to both budget travellers and those splashing out
Hostel dormitories with self-catering facilities are a good way to live cheaply but you can get a hotel room to yourself inexpensively on a mid-range budget. The cost of food and accommodation is generally lower in more rural areas
Know when to go – missing Rio’s busy carnival week, as well as school holidays in January and June, can avoid higher prices for accommodation
It’s a good idea to agree on taxi fares. Many drivers won’t turn their metres on at all, so settle on a price before you set off to avoid being ripped off
You can also keep costs down by trying an Amazon alternative – on a one-day trip to the Pantanal it’s possible to see all kinds of wildlife, including caimans, macaws and toucans
The Brazilian real is the official currency of Brazil, abbreviated to BRL. Its currency symbol is R$. One real is subdivided into 100 centavos. The currency is issued by the Central Bank of Brazil. But you can get yours from Post Office, either by buying online or at your local participating branch.
Only Brazil itself uses the Brazilian real as a currency. It’s not used officially by any other country.
Brazilian banknotes come in 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 and 200 reals. There’s also a 1 real bank note still in circulation, but it’s rarely seen because it’s no longer printed.
Coins in the currency include the 1 real and the 5, 10, 25 and 50 centavos. Confusingly, other coins are also used in Brazil, minted by community banks and recognised by the Central Bank to help stimulate local economies. You may see some on your travels.
Buying Brazilian real from Post Office is simple. You can visit one of our branches that sells foreign currency or order online for collection or delivery. If you order online by 3pm on a working day, collection or delivery is normally available the next working day. Delivery is free for online orders of £500 or more.
If you’re visiting any country, it’s important to check upfront for any restrictions to travel or risks, laws and alerts to consider if you make the trip. The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office has regularly updated travel advice for all countries and territories, including Brazil. Remember, if you travel against official advice you could invalidate your travel insurance policy.
