How far will your Bulgarian lev go?

  • Sunny Beach in Bulgaria has been a great-value tourist destination for years running and, with flights taking around three hours, the country is an increasingly popular destination. You can nip over for a weekend break or spend your whole summer break seeing the sights

  • All beaches are obliged by law to have free areas where you can bring your own towels and chairs, and free English-speaking tours of Sofia are available from the Palace of Justice

  • Some hotels and car rental firms will accept euros, but it is unwise to count on this

  • Always pack travel insurance and make sure you know the local phone numbers you need in case something goes wrong

Some common questions

  • The Bulgarian lev (BGN) is the official currency of Bulgaria. While Bulgaria is an EU member state, it has not adopted the euro as its currency.

Each lev (meaning ‘lion’ in old Bulgarian) can be divided into 100 stotinki. The plural of lev is leva. Leva banknotes come in 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100. There’s also a 1 lev and 2 leva coin.

    Stotinki coins come in 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50.

  • The Bulgarian lev is only used in Bulgaria. Bulgaria has also mooted various dates to join the euro, however this is yet to happen.

  • You can order Bulgarian lev online quickly and easily, online or in thousands of participating branches.

Choose click and collect online to pick up your currency in selected participating branches UK wide. Order it by 3pm and you can usually pick your holiday money up the next working day.
