Which Christmas market destinations offer best value?
Post Office Travel Money is pleased to share our Christmas Markets Report 2024. We’ve compared the cost of short Christmas market breaks in 14 popular European cities to see were you’ll get best value.
We’ve looked at prices for a two-night stay, including flights or train rides, transfers, meals and festive treats like mulled wine and cakes. We found Eastern European cities take nine of the top ten spots. And Bratislava, Gdansk and Vilnius – all new to the survey – feature in the top four.
Key findings include:
- Bratislava, Slovakia, offers the best value, followed closely by Vilnius, Lithuania. Both cities have affordable accommodation and dining
- Riga, Latvia, drops to third after five years at the top
- Gdansk in Poland, ranks fourth. Its prices are over 12% lower than Krakow, which is eighth despite a 20% drop since last year
- Only a few cities have seen price drops, including Prague, Czech Republic and Budapest, Hungary
- Rising flight and accommodation costs have made most cities more expensive, but food, drinks and transfers are cheaper in some places
- Bratislava’s total cost for two people is £510, nearly half that of the most expensive city, Copenhagen (£989). Vienna is also among the most expensive cities surveyed
- A strong UK pound has improved value for UK travellers, allowing for more spending money at Christmas markets
