How far will my Danish kroner go?

  • One way to make your holiday budget go further is make use of Denmark’s huge network of camping grounds and upmarket hostels

  • You can keep costs down further by shopping at supermarkets and preparing your own food. Continental breakfasts at bakeries are much cheaper than hotel ones

  • The capital Copenhagen has hotels and restaurants to cater for a range of budgets

  • It’s best explored on a canal boat cruise, which takes in the old Nyhavn port area and heads to the famous Little Mermaid sculpture at Langelinje Pier

  • Take advantage of free rental bikes to get around the main attractions. There are over 1,000 of them at 100 stations around the city

  • Avoid over-tipping – most bills include a service charge, so there’s no need to add on more. Save your receipts – non-EU residents can get a VAT refund at the airport

  • Don’t forget you can get your Danish kroner on a Travel Money Card as well as buy your travel insurance with Post Office

Some common questions

  • Danish krone is the official currency of Denmark. The plural is kroner. The currency is abbreviated to DKK and its symbol is kr.

  • While no other countries use the krone officially other than the Kingdom of Denmark, it’s also the recognised currency of Greenland and the Faroe Islands, an autonomous territory within it.

  • You can buy Danish krone online using our click and collect or click and deliver services. Orders placed before 3pm can be collected in any Post Office branch or delivered to your home the next working day.

If you prefer to pop in to place your order, you can do it in thousands of participating branches. To find a convenient branch, including those providing travel money services, use our branch finder.

If you prefer to use plastic, there’s Travel Money Card. It’s a prepaid MasterCard® you can load before going away with any of 22 different currencies, including the Danish krone.

You may get a better exchange rate if you order online. Buying larger quantities at a time can reduce the rate further. And if you buy at a good time for the pound, you can lock in that great rate.

  • The highest value banknote in the Danish currency is the 1000 krone note. The complete list of denominations is:

    • 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1000 krone notes
    • 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 krone coins
