Malaysia has become increasingly popular with backpackers in recent years, with hostel dorms cheap and plentiful
Private rooms at mid-range hotels aren’t expensive either but cost more in the capital, Kuala Lumpur. Four- and five-star options are available in the major cities too
Eating three-course meals at sit-down restaurants will bump up your budget. Alcohol prices are high to discourage drinking, which is frowned upon in Malaysia
If you fancy a little luxury or pampering, you’ll also find exclusive resorts and spas on most of the islands
Agree fares up front – taxis aren’t metered, so agree on a price before driving off
Take domestic flights – you can choose cheaper domestic airlines to get around the country
Check if you need to tip – many hotels and upscale restaurants include a 10% service charge
The Malaysian ringgit is the official currency of Malaysia, issued by Bank Negara Malaysia. It’s abbreviated to MYR and its symbol is RM.
Malaysia is the only country to officially use the Malaysian ringgit. But the currency is also used unofficially in parts of Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam.
