How far will my Malaysian money go?

  • Malaysia has become increasingly popular with backpackers in recent years, with hostel dorms cheap and plentiful

  • Private rooms at mid-range hotels aren’t expensive either but cost more in the capital, Kuala Lumpur. Four- and five-star options are available in the major cities too

  • Eating three-course meals at sit-down restaurants will bump up your budget. Alcohol prices are high to discourage drinking, which is frowned upon in Malaysia

  • If you fancy a little luxury or pampering, you’ll also find exclusive resorts and spas on most of the islands

  • Agree fares up front – taxis aren’t metered, so agree on a price before driving off

  • Take domestic flights – you can choose cheaper domestic airlines to get around the country

  • Check if you need to tip – many hotels and upscale restaurants include a 10% service charge

Some common questions

  • The Malaysian ringgit is the official currency of Malaysia, issued by Bank Negara Malaysia. It’s abbreviated to MYR and its symbol is RM.

  • Malaysia is the only country to officially use the Malaysian ringgit. But the currency is also used unofficially in parts of Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam.

  • For a competitive rate and 0% commission, order Malaysian ringgit online or in any of our thousands of participating branches around the UK.

Order online and you could get a better rate. You can also collect online currency orders in branch or get them delivered home (both the next working day if ordered by 3pm). Delivery’s free on orders of £500 or more.

The more holiday money you buy the better the rate. And watching the exchange rate to buy when the pound is strong will save you some money.

  • The highest denomination in the Malaysian currency is the 100 ringgit banknote. The lowest value coin is the 5 sen. There are 100 sen in a ringgit.

    The full list of denominations is: 1, 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 ringgit notes and 5, 10, 20 and 50 sen coins.
