Why visit the United Arab Emirates?

  • Seven territories make up the United Arab Emirates: Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Dubai, Fujairah, Ras al Khaima, Sharjah and Umm al Qaiwain. Often called simply ‘the Emirates’, it’s a sovereign state that’s filled with contrasts

  • On one hand you have skyscraper hotels and world-famous restaurants. On the other, this Islamic state has an enduring Bedouin tradition

  • All of this means your day can start with designer shopping in a Western-style mall and end with a visit to the open-air markets and local cafés

  • Plus, no visit to the United Arab Emirates is complete without a trip to the vast desert sands – whether it’s on a camel, a quad bike or in a 4x4

  • Avoid the hotel cars – they cost much more than local taxis and also have to pay road tolls

  • Hit the beach – for such an expensive city, one of Dubai's top attractions is completely free

  • Shop at markets not malls – western-style shopping centres bump up their prices and don’t have as good an atmosphere

Some common questions

  • The UAE dirham is the official currency of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The name ‘dirham’ is derived from the Greek currency, the drachma. One dirham is subdivided into 100 files.

The UAE currency is issued by the Central Bank of the United Arab Emirates – but you can get yours for your trip from the Post Office.

  • Seven counties make up the UAE and use the dirham. They are Abu Dhabi (which serves as the capital), Ajman, Dubai, Fujairah, Ras al Khaima, Sharjah and Umm al Qaiwain.

  • You can buy UAE dirham online using our click and collect or click and deliver services, or buy your currency in thousands of participating Post Office branches. To locate the nearest branch to you that offers this service please use our branch finder.

You may get a better exchange rate if you order online or if you buy larger quantities at a time. Buying when the pound is strong against the UAE dirham can also save you money.

If you like, we’ll deliver online orders of UAE dirham to your home. Or, if you prefer to carry plastic, try our Travel Money Card. You can load this secure, prepaid Mastercard® with up to 22 currencies, the UAE dirham included.

  • The highest value banknote in the UAE dirham currency is the 1000 dirham note.

    Other notes in the currency are the 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500, 1000 dirham notes.

  • The lowest UAE dirham denomination is the 1 dirham coin, but the smallest coin in circulation is the 20 fils coin (five of which make up one dirham). There is also a coin valued at 50 fils. Coins use Eastern Arabic numbers so it’s worth learning numbers 0-9 before you go.
